Kareem Puranda, a counselor-in-training, recently witnessed an associate experience a breakdown after working with a client. His associate “kept it together” during the session, despite the fact that she was experiencing a crisis in her life. She told him it was a struggle to remain focused because of this crisis. This experience showed him how valuable self-care is for those not only in the counseling profession, but also in professions like law enforcement, where burnout and desensitization are a problem. Kareem has come to identify self-care and “redefining the surrounding reality” as necessary for coping and normalization. He also views bad news, bad times, and mistakes as experiences that make us more resilient.
