Positive psychology is a new field of social science referred to as “the science of happiness.” It’s not positive thinking. It’s not self-help. It’s the study of things that make life worth living. Traditional psychology helps us get rid of what we don’t want and fixes what’s wrong. Positive psychology helps us get more of what we want and makes us better and happier people. It’s been referred to as the “psychology of building.” Its roots spring from emotional research, humanism, cognitive behavioral therapy, moral psychology, and the humanities. The goal of positive psychology is to create joyful, engaged individuals; healthy institutions; and communities that flourish.
