It’s often hard to know how to help a loved one with depression. Words can often do more harm than good, as almost everything can somehow be twisted to sound like an insult. Sometimes making suggestions to a depressed person makes them feel they are doing something terribly wrong, and that the depression is all their fault. Saying nothing is perhaps the most uncomfortable response, but often the very best and most appropriate one. Typically, we tend to fill in the silence with something, even if it’s weather talk. But saying nothing, and merely listening, may be exactly what’s needed most.
