Have you been feeling depressed? The cause doesn’t matter. What matters is that you shift out of depression. Dr. Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology, devised an exercise called the “Gratitude Visit” to show how easy it is to change depression to happiness. Participants in the “Gratitude Visit” exercise were instructed to write a letter of gratitude to a person who had changed their lives for the better. They were further instructed to read the letter to their special person, and notice that person’s reaction. Happiness, Seligman says, consists of five elements: positive emotion, being involved, having relationships, possessing meaning, and experiencing achievement. The “Gratitude Visit” works because it contains all five aspects.
