In the practice of Tibetan Buddhism, cultivating real compassion is an exercise in “setting your intention”—scanning your inner landscape and giving voice to the direction you want to go.
Uncover your motivations and align them with your intentions by sitting comfortably every morning. Take a few deep breaths. What do you value deeply? What do you wish for yourself and for the people you love?
If you don’t find immediate answers, don’t panic. Value the questions themselves. Determine a set of specific intentions for your day. Later, without judgment, reflect on how your day lined up against your intentions. Remember the good and take joy in the effort you made.
