How we treat or “parent” ourselves is often totally the opposite of how we treat others. We take good care of others while treating ourselves badly. Self-parenting comes in many forms; some tell you that everything is your fault while others tell you that nothing is ever somebody else’s fault; they had a good reason for hurting you. Sometimes self-parenting says, “you caused the problem, you have to fix it!” and offers no comfort while other times you’re told that your feelings don’t matter, you’re too sensitive or your feelings are just wrong or not worth paying attention to. To break away from these self-parenting patterns, you must first be aware that they exist.
