Robin Williams’ suicide has brought a surge of attention to the topic of depression. People are confused about how someone with so much going for him, and who seems to have joy flowing like water from a fountain, couldn’t find the will to live. It’s hard for those who’ve never experienced it to understand. We need to see depression for what it is – an illness that’s as real as asthma or arthritis, or any other. And most importantly, it’s an illness that can be treated. Talking openly about personal depression isn’t easy, but having the courage to do so is the first step toward overcoming it.
