Anyone who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or loves someone who does, knows that joint pain and fatigue can affect many areas of everyday life, including a couple’s sex life. The symptoms of RA can make sex and intimacy difficult by making sex painful or reducing the libido. Dealing with the pain and physical limitations of one partner, and the misdirected anger and frustration of both partners, can put a strain on a relationship and make maintaining intimacy seem almost impossible. Excellent communication between partners is essential to overcoming intimacy problems. If both partners are aware of bad days, they know that it’s the disease and nothing personal that’s interfering in the bedroom.
