As humans, we can either be miserable and harmful to others, or be happy and compassionate to others. While being harmful to others by lying or stealing may have short-term benefits, when we show compassion to others, we obtain long-term happiness and develop inner strength. So how do we cultivate compassion? Let’s first define what compassion is. Compassion is the sincere desire for others happiness and wellbeing, and applies to everyone, whether friend or foe. This is no easy feat. To truly desire happiness and wellbeing for others with no thought of reward for ourselves, may be difficult. We must train ourselves to have this compassion. One way to accomplish this is to realize that everyone has the right to seek and obtain happiness and wellbeing. They are no different than you.
