If, on the other hand, you’re in the second group, here are some tips to help you get through it: 1) Identify what may trigger uncomfortable feelings and prepare a more positive response. The recipient of your changed response may resist the change in your behavior; be prepared. 2) Recognize that as an adult you have more power than you did as a child. If you’d rather be somewhere else, as hard as it may be, go somewhere else. 3) Use humor to deflect tense situations. Know your audience and be creative.
