Our lives today are so filled with stress that we unconsciously develop coping mechanisms as outlets for our stress. To meet stress directly, it’s essential that we overcome these coping mechanisms and discover the underlying causes of our stress. The causes can be anything from our response to challenges or choices we’re making that are out of alignment with our innermost feelings. Coping mechanisms have an addictive quality to them and we have difficulty resisting them. They are a crutch we lean on and become unconscious, harmful habits that prevent us from dealing with stress. A first step toward overcoming these mechanisms is to pay attention to how and where we spend our time.
