While it may seem natural to ask what’s wrong with them, usually the person who’s depressed knows there is no concrete reason to feel down, so your question will only make them feel worse. Instead, it’s enough to just let someone know that you’re there for them. Not having to go through depression alone can help lessen the pressure a depressed person feels. It is also much more helpful to visit in person, instead of over the phone or internet. That way you can get a better picture of how they are really feeling.
