Any time one reaches out for something — acceptance, approval, the good opinion of friends and family, or anyone at all — there’s the risk and indeed the certainty of rejection from time to time. Rejection is so common, we do not usually stop to consider it as such. Applying for a job, reaching out for a date, or running for an office are situations where, no matter how self confident, people will feel distressed when rejected. Keep in mind that a rejection is not necessarily, or even usually, a reflection of who you are. People get turned down for every sort of thing for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with merit.
