You can help someone suffering from depression by being what you likely already are—a good friend. It’s hard to know exactly how to be a friend, when it feels like she’s pushing you away. Your loved one might need you to encourage seeking treatment, when she doesn’t feel strong enough to do so on her own. Try and draw your loved one back into the world—slowly. Suggest a walk today, and going to the movies tomorrow. You can help by really listening, when she talks about the pain she is feeling. You can offer a hopeful, realistic perspective.
