Alice Boyes, Ph.D., reports that couples having problems in their relationship wait, on average, five to six years before they’ll see a therapist. She also notes than many people with anxiety, eating disorders, or depression are frequently already taking one or more medications before they come to therapy. Why do people avoid therapy? Some people feel they can fix the problem themselves, some worry that they’ll be stuck in therapy for a long time, and some won’t go because there are no guarantees of success. If you have a problem you can’t fix and/or people in your life are telling you that you need help, it’s very likely you can be helped with therapy.
