A study of over 30,000 children has linked depression in the father to emotional distress in children. A number of reasons has been brought forth to explain this. One, depression may have been genetically given to the child. Two, the depression may cause extra emotional distress on the expectant mother, affecting development. Or three, that the depression in the father continues after birth, and that behavior affects infant development. More research is needed to help clear up the unresolved questions. Whatever the explanation, it is clear that depression in both parents during pregnancy is important to monitor.
