As badly as we would all like to get rid of our stress, the truth is that nothing can banish it, and our brain needs it to function. Our brain needs one system to push us towards things that are good for us, and another system to pull us back from things that are bad for us. Without unhappy chemicals, we would seek happy chemicals with no regard for the risks. Unhappy chemicals promote survival as much as happy chemicals. When it sees a threat, your brain releases cortisol: a big surge for pain or panic, or a small, steady drip for anxiety or stress, warning us of danger.
