Narcissists are often described as a bit full of themselves, self-centered, and not too concerned about the effects they have on other people. This can be quite damaging to interpersonal relationships, social bonding, and social behavior. Researchers at the University of Surrey and the University of Southampton wanted to investigate whether a narcissist could feel empathy, and also whether previously non-empathetic people could change their behavior. Their findings suggested that narcissists — under the right conditions — do have the ability to empathize with other people’s needs. The study result is encouraging. If relatively antisocial members of society can be empathetic, it could improve their chances for long-term relationships.
