THE MYTHS ABOUT BIPOLAR DISORDER

What you have been told

Bipolar Disorder is a constellation of symptoms. You may have mood swings, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, anger, depression, anxiety, as well as a host of other issues. In conventional psychiatry and psychotherapy, Bipolar Disorder is seen as a disorder of the brain. Under this paradigm, at best it can go into remission, but you likely will always feel like you’re struggling more than most people around you. At worst, it rules you for your entire life.

Bipolar symptoms wreak havoc in a person’s life and are extremely painful as you probably know. Conventional psychiatry stabilizes people by suppressing symptoms through the use of medication. These methods are NOT wrong. They are designed to suppress symptoms and achieve stabilization. Stabilization is a necessary stage of healing. However, simply stabilizing symptoms will not ultimately help you identify and resolve the causes of this disorder.

The CAUSES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER

What you haven’t been told

There are underlying causes to your disorder and, overtime, as you identify and heal them you can live an extraordinary life.

Conventional medicine researchers spend a good amount on time on researching genetics as a key influencer to this disorder. The body is a living organism. Even if you have predispositions to your brain behaving in a Bipolar-like way, we now know that through epigenetics you can alter your genes and the overall functioning of your brain and body.

During my own twenty-year journey of overcoming Bipolar Disorder, as well as working with clients with this disorder for over a decade, I’ve found that the path to healing requires the following four stages of recovery:

1. Stabilization:

If you are not stabilized, your Bipolar symptoms are significantly disrupting your life. This might mean that you’ve been hospitalized recently, you may be dealing with suicidal thoughts, significantly depressed, manic, and other dissociative symptoms. You likely also have a combination of other related conditions listed above.

During this stage of recovery, we will work together to put a treatment team in place. As your lead therapist, I will utilize a combination of the following techniques in order to help you get stable as quickly as possible:

  • Initial Evaluation
  • Advice on a Treatment Team
  • Treatment Goals
  • Basic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Psychoeducation
  • Basic Mindfulness
  • Basic Sleep Hygiene

If you need medication, I’m well networked to provide you with a referral with the best providers in town. If you choose not to take medication we can also look at alternatives.

2. Discovery:

Once basic stabilization has been achieved, we will progress into the discovery stage of treatment. This phase is often very exciting for people. Some people are already stable and ready to start therapy at this level of healing. During the discovery stage, we will explore the root causes of this condition in your body, mind and the primary relationships in your life.

There are many overlooked areas of the body that are essential for recovery. For example, your gut health is a key factor in getting well. I will explore basic diets that people with this condition thrive on. These diets reduce inflammation in the body which has been linked to many psychiatric disorders and chronic diseases. You will also receive other referrals as we go through the discovery process if you need specialists to deal with imbalances happening in your body.

One of the most overlooked areas of Bipolar Disorder is the mindset that accompanies it. Conventional medicine mostly paints a picture that this is a mood disorder based in the brain. Bipolar disorder represents an extreme polarity that also exists in the mind. Depression and mania become the poles that the mind functions between.

Think of your mind as the earth and the north pole as mania and the south pole as depression. The world you live in is filled with experiences that are either manic, depressed or some mixed version of the two. Even if you are stabilized and symptoms are suppressed, your Bipolar mindset will not go away until you do something about it. Ok, that’s the BAD news.

Here’s the really GOOD news... you can literally rewire and balance your mind with specific exercises that will help you identify the polarization and balance the mania and depression into a more consistent experience of joy and peace. During the discovery stage, I will help you identify the polarization in your mind and begin the process of balancing.

The last remaining area that’s critical in the discovery process are your relationships. Most people with a Bipolar condition report a high degree of adverse childhood experiences, traumas that are known or unknown, spiritual issues, and problems with attaching in a healthy way in their past and present. We will explore your relationships historically and currently for indicators of traumas and attachment issues that are contributing factors to your condition.

3. Transformation:

The transformation stage begins at stabilization, but it truly takes off after the discovery stage is complete. Once we’ve identified many of the root causes, we will address them one-by-one. From nearly two decades of intensive self-study and professional experience, I’ve found that a combination of the following techniques to be most useful in treating the underlying causes of this condition:

  • Enhanced Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Cognitive Restructuring
  • Advanced Belief Balancing
  • Trauma Resolution
  • Attachment Repair
  • Relationship Work
  • High Performance Coaching and Lifestyle Changes
  • Spiritual Connections
  • Shamanic Work

4. Thriving:

As you deepen into the transformational process, you will begin to experience the final stages of healing. I call it thriving because you’ve literally travessed a difficult road from merely surviving into a fully thriving human life. The journey of healing never truly ends for anyone. We can always attain higher potential in ourselves. However, when people transform the causes of their Bipolar Disorder they report feeling joy a majority of the time, consistent healthy sleep patterns, high levels of success in their careers and relationships, and an overall state of gratitude for life.
