One of the goals of recovery and learning to live a sober life is to regain control over your life and choices. It’s easy though, for alcoholics and addicts new to recovery to substitute one addiction for another, becoming compulsively involved in other activities. While some activities, like work or exercise, are generally healthy activities, they can become a problem if they become a transfer of addictions. Other compulsive behaviors are neither healthy nor productive and include gambling, sex, video games, or shopping. Many alcoholics and addicts also begin to smoke marijuana, arguing that it is less harmful. Long-term recovery depends on finding balance in your life.
