When I Grow Up

Andrea Holyfield, a counselor who specializes in career counseling and women’s empowerment, clearly remembers what she wanted to be when she grew up: a teacher/doctor/farmer/cowgirl. Well-meaning relatives, teachers, and friends wielding what they thought was common sense, convinced Holyfield she didn’t have the math skills to be a doctor, the patience to be a teacher, or enough horses to be a farmer/cowgirl. At 30, Holyfield began to allow herself to have her dream. Her identity as a counselor lets her teach and heal, she gardens as a hobby, and has finally ridden a horse. She says, “I don’t have to choose a place to land…I am the happiest that I have been in a LONG time.”
