Quit Smoking and You May End Your Anxiety

Research from England suggests that smokers who light up when they feel anxious will relieve more anxiety if they quit smoking altogether. Scientists followed nearly 500 smokers who were attending stop smoking clinics and found that the 68 smokers who were still not smoking after six months had a “significant” drop in anxiety levels. Many people, including some health professionals, believe that smoking decreases anxiety. This belief may stop people from attempting to quit. To reduce anxiety, however, the smoker must quit. Researchers found that people with mood disorders who try to quit but fail actually have increased levels of anxiety.
