Dr. Henry Emmons believes that the Buddhist practice of mindfulness can be used to overcome depression and anxiety. Dr. Emmons, who has a background in both western medicine and Buddhist therapeutics, practices general and holistic psychiatry. He has found mindfulness to be very rewarding in his own practice. He believes mindfulness is very straightforward, which is not saying that it’s easy. It means paying attention, being more present from moment-to-moment, and enhancing the ability to be with and see things as they are unfolding. There are many distractions that pull us out of the present moment, especially when we are dealing with anxiety and depression.
