A new study published in JAMA Psychiatry has found that individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and even their children, are at significantly greater risk for developing schizophrenia later in life. Although OCD and schizophrenia are two distinct mental disorders, previous research has also suggested a link between the two conditions. This latest study reports that the two mental health disorders probably exist on a common pathway, but that further research is needed to unravel which genetic and environmental risk factors are truly common to both. Despite the overlapping of the two disorders, the study does not necessarily suggest combining the two disorders into one diagnosis.
