There are many reasons people turn to meditation. Some want to relieve stress, hoping meditation will help their mental and physical well-being. Others have a spiritual question, or feel there’s something missing from their lives. For some, meditation will help them understand the way things really are. Whatever the reason, when we step away from our assumptions and develop the spiritual discipline of a meditation practice, things happen. There are types of meditation for every purpose, but James Ishmael Ford suggests a minimalist approach. He finds the practice of “sitting down, shutting up, and paying attention is the most useful path to a more healthy life.”
