How to Meditate and Signs of Spiritual Progress

It’s tempting to ask ourselves if we’re making “progress” on the spiritual path, but that’s a set-up—a guarantee we won’t measure up to some arbitrary goal we’ve established. One sign of progress in meditation practice is that our “kleshas” diminish, those strong conflicting emotions that increase when we get caught by aversion and attraction. Also, we begin to acknowledge what’s happening, and our acknowledgment is compassionate—not judgmental, parental, or authoritarian. When we quit thinking that anything—including ourselves—is either good or bad, we open our minds to forgiveness and humor. The process of letting go of our concept of “progress” is where our hearts open and soften—over and over again.
