This task can seem daunting, especially when you’re already overwhelmed. Beverly Palmer, a clinical psychologist in Torrance, California, suggests seeking a recommendation from your doctor or someone you know. Some mental health conditions have organizations that can direct you to a qualified provider, Palmer says. Another good resource, especially if you don’t have insurance, is your county health clinic. You can also search online or in a phone book for “mental health” services in your area; however, remember that anyone can call themselves a counselor.
