Research conducted at the University of Chicago found that in longer marriages, the health and personality of the husband may be crucial to avoiding conflict and maintaining happiness. The study, published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, revealed that when the husband had a higher level of positivity, less marital conflict was reported. According to Linda J. Waite, professor of urban sociology and director of the Center on Aging, the conflicts examined by the study primarily revolved around whether a spouse makes too many demands of their partner, or perpetually criticizes the other. Based on these results, it’s reasonable to suggest that a positive man greatly increases the chance of a successful marriage.
