The first step in treating depression is accepting it as a real health issue, and realizing there are ways to heal from it. A new study from Northwestern University has even identified certain genetic fingerprints that diagnose depression, and help determine which therapies would be most effective for each person. Moreover, there is a solid series of scientifically-proven actions people can take to curb symptoms of depression, including exercise and mindfulness meditation. A combination of medication and psychotherapy is often the most beneficial. Other studies have revealed that psychotherapy is helpful in preventing depression relapses. Despite these reassuring realities, it’s estimated that only two-thirds of those suffering with depression seek help.
