Borderline personality disorder (BPD) isn’t just about mental illness and emotional distress, but also about social skills (or lack of them). Five survival techniques desperately needed when suffering from BPD include empathy, manners, conflict resolution and self-care. Lacking social skills potentially means job losses, social exclusion, lack of friends and relationship difficulties. Using good manners and showing empathy is difficult as well, when cognitively and/or emotionally challenged. Successful conflict resolution starts with “I’m sorry,” or “I made a mistake.” These statements are empowering, and mean you are responsibly taking ownership of your words and actions. Eating well and exercising regularly, along with avoiding drugs and alcohol, is also important for those suffering BPD.
