6 Things That Can Worsen Depression

For those who are depressed, there are many articles about how to improve their outlook. There are also certain things depression sufferers should avoid. In her book, Living with Depression, Deborah Serani, Psy.D, shares six triggers that can make depression worse: 1) Stress. Stress raises cortisol which keeps the body “emergency ready.” 2) Sleep. Sleeping too much or not enough can worsen symptoms. 3) Food. Certain foods can aggravate moods. 4) Toxic People. Toxic people are “negative and corrosive” and should be avoided. 5) Media. News stories that are upsetting or disturbing can increase symptoms of depression. 6) Anniversary reactions. The anniversary of a traumatic event can be difficult for people who are depressed.
